Holiday Series: Giving Thanks to our Pets Daily
Introduction
Everyone loves their pet(s). People even love other people’s pets! Domestic animal’s gifts to humans are their unconditional love and their presence. Giving thanks to our pets is important not just at Thanksgiving when we are all thinking about what we are thankful for, but everyday giving thanks to our beloved pets.
How can we give thanks to our pets?
As always, I ask you to put yourself in your pet’s point of view. As an animal what do you really want? Well, besides sitting under the children’s table at Thanksgiving dinner where you can beg with cute eyes for all the turkey and food you want! Haha
You are your pet’s life. You leave the house do your thing, sometimes they come with you other times they wonder where you go. They really want to spend time with you! Un interrupted one on one time with YOU! This does not include you talking on the phone at the dog park while they do zoomies with their dog pals.
One on one time should not need to be “scheduled”. Especially if you have a cat, they will let you know when it’s time to play. It should take 5-10 minutes…you have that time, its time you will never get back. If you have multiple pets take a few minutes for each animal separately to make each, feel special and appreciated.
Examples of easy one on one time:
Shooting hair ties (or rubber bands if you have short hair) across the room for your cat.
Play ball with your dog
Play hide the ball with your dog
Take your horse for a walk, just the 2 of you, walk next to your horse around the pasture or arena.
Teach your parrot or talking bird a new word or song
Brushing your dog, cat, horse – only if they like this
For senior pets, read a page or two of the book you are reading to them or internet article, they really don’t care what you are reading, they like that you are reading to THEM! Kinda like a little kid bedtime book…. same concept.
The above are easy one on one activities that take 5-10 minutes, don’t have to be scheduled and are greatly appreciated by your pet. I’m sure you can think of some game or fun time your pet loves!
Conclusion
Give thanks to your pet daily with uninterrupted one on one time every day. You will be amazed at how much they appreciate your attention and watch your bond grow much stronger!
