Holiday Series: Pets and Holiday Parties

Introduction

Fa La La La La……the Holiday Season is here!  Lots of changes for our pets!  Weather changes (depending on where you live) colder, snow, more indoor time L Parties and overnight guests, sometimes even a short or long stay at a boarding facility.  As a pet, I’m not sure I would be overjoyed at the Holiday Season!

No matter what, the Holiday Season holds unexpected changes for our pets to deal with.  In our Holiday Season Series, we are going to look at some Holiday happenings or changes that may affect your pet; even though the holiday Season comes around every year!

Reminders to help your pet(s) with Holiday Parties:

  • Give your pet a “safe space” all their own.  For a dog its usually their crate/kennel.  Make sure it’s in a quiet space where unwanted visitors are not going to disturb or peek in and want to interact (you never know what guests may do…….)

  • Try to keep routine feeding time and walks on schedule.  My dog always knows when its “walk o’clock” rain, snow or sunshine!

  • Your pet does NOT need to attend a party with you (unless you have a service dog.)  In fact, for their safety, please keep them in their “safe space” or crate.  This protects your pet AND your guests from your pet protecting themselves if cornered or overwhelmed.

  • Pets are very sensitive to humans drinking alcohol and making bad choices or even loud laughing and lots of commotion.  Respect your pet and make sure they are in their safe space or kennel.

 Conclusion

Parties for humans can be fun, let’s not bring our pets into unwanted situations.  Look at a party from your pet’s point of view….. on the ground, lots of new smells, lots of music or even loud voices, more feet and legs than normal.  It can be overwhelming, or it might entice them into bad behaviors like table surfing for food even zoomies due to anxiety.  Let’s keep it fun and safe for everyone. In my opinion dogs should be in their crate in a quiet room, cats and birds in their safe space in a quiet room, not to be disturbed. Your pets will thank you!
